The Most Hated Comment on Digg

We all remember that sad day when Steve Irwin “the crocodile hunter” died after being struck in the chest by a sting-ray, and naturally an article was posted about it on Digg. But when I came across this Digg article recently, two things stood out to me:

1. The sheer number of comments (788 at the time of writing this) which completely froze up my web browser for about 5 minutes whilst the page loaded.
2. The most buried comment I have come across on Digg – with minus 1060 diggs (again at the time of writing this)!

Yes congratulations to yevkasem, whose sick comment “nice, it’s about time.” on 9/03/06 has got to be the most hated comment on Digg.

Top 5 Charity 2.0 Websites

Here are my top 5 favorite charity and donation websites, styled in the Web 2.0 theme:

#5 – Idea List

logo_idealist.jpg

An extensive directory of non-profit and volunteering resources and organizations. This funky site allows you to post jobs, volunteer opportunities, internships, events, programs, resources, and campaigns. Although it’s more of a social networking site, it does encourage people to promote good in the world, so for that we put it in 5th place.

#4 – British Heart Foundation

The British Heart Foundation is a charity organisation in the United Kingdom that sponsors research aimed to prevent heart diseases in humans. It’s slick red interface is nicely designed and easy to navigate, which puts it at number 4 in our list.

#3 – Justgiving

logo_justgiving.jpg

Justgiving allows you to create your own online fundraising page for any event or occasion. You can collect and track donations online. Since their launch in 2001, 2,500 member charities have collected more than £130 million through Justgiving. It seems like a great idea, so we put it in 3rd place.

#2 – Robinhood Fund

logo_robinhood.jpg

The Robinhood Fund is committed to fulfilling as many everyday wishes for as many everyday people as possible. The site is setup so that anyone can submit a wish, promote it to the world, and have their “dreams fulfilled through the wisdom of crowds”. A similar concept to Justgiving, people can have donations sent to them online, but for more personal things such as losing a loved one. This makes an excellent number 2, but here comes the winner…

#1 – ChipIn

logo_chipin.jpg

ChipIn’s mission is to make it easy to collect money. Users can organize group payments and fundraisers in a quick, easy, and secure way. They also make it simple for organizers to publicize their ChipIns, by providing powerful fundraising widgets that can be embedded in social media. With a great design (I love the logo) and very Web 2.0 styled, ChipIn is the winner!

MySpace to hold mock presidential election

MySpace.com announced on Tuesday plans to hold a virtual presidential election.

The mock election, to be held January 1 and 2, will be open to all MySpace users who reside in the United States, regardless of voting eligibility in the government-run election in November 2008.

Although the MySpace votes won’t count for the official election, results compiled from the News Corp. social-networking site’s millions of members may help candidates gauge their potential success in real voting booths next year. They also may provide a glimpse into overall public sentiment for the politicians.

“Iowa and New Hampshire may be selecting delegates, but the MySpace vote will be the first test of where candidates stand in the election year,” MySpace President Tom Anderson said in a statement.

Prior to holding its mock online election, MySpace plans to conduct virtual straw polls of its members. The results of these polls and the virtual primary results will be posted on MySpace’s Impact channel.

The channel, launched last month, aims to serve as an online hub for the 2008 elections, housing the MySpace profiles of such presidential candidates as Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama.
